about
WA roots-rock-folk singer/songwriter, Michael Day is set to release their fourth single, Winter Winds.
People are notoriously bad at communicating and thus conflict rears its' ugly head, time and time again.
“I had a conflict with a friend and instead of dealing with it, I wrote a song about how bad we are at dealing with conflict,” Day jokes.
Winter Winds is a reflection on conflict and our somewhat ironic responses to it. While acknowledging conflict, we often pass the blame and miss the fact that we are actually a part of, if not all, the problem. We can retort ‘If you were in my shoes’ all the while, not putting ourselves in the shoes of others nor showing true empathy.
Winter Winds is somewhat satirical in nature, exposing the flaws in our own hearts, yelling ‘Just deal with it’ while not actually dealing with the problem. Borne of Day’s own experience of conflict and His own struggles with it, Winter Winds hopes to invite its’ listeners to consider their own responses to conflict and hopefully grow in empathy and self awareness.
The piece comprises of a whimsical guitar/banjo riff giving a naive sense of euphoria. While it’s driving rhythms give the sense of the unrelenting nature of the topic. Furthermore, moody ambience and haunting vocal harmonies add to the tapestry of sound giving the piece a sense of apprehension.
Michael Day Launch ‘Winter Winds’ on the 15th of May, at The Sonar Room in Fremantle, alongside Ashleigh Carr-White and Chelsea Elder and Band.
Verse 1
Winter Winds they keep on blowin’, seasons change but the forecast’s showin’,
they’ll be here soon enough, am I ready for it?
Verse 2
Warm water fills the bath that’s growin’, soon enough it’s over flowing.
Thought that I’d had enough, still these troubles coming.
Pre Chorus
Here it comes, but I run, but I run, but I run away from it. But I run away from it.
Here it comes, but I run, but I run, but I run away from it. But I run away from it.
Chorus
People in my life are the problem see.
If you were in my shoes, then you’d probably see.
Just give it a year, maybe one, two, or three.
I hope you are seeing all the irony.
The lies that I keep telling me, to help me flee.
Verse 3
Open flame is burnin’ higher, watching on, but hide the lighter. This was all your fault, always doing something!
Bridge
Here it comes and I don’t know what to do about it.
Run away or scream and shout and yell about it.
Is it not OK to sit and chat and talk about it?
But here it comes and I don’t know what to do about it.
Run away or scream and shout and yell about it.
Is it not OK to sit and chat and talk about it?
My body screams, why can’t you just deal!?
